Gamranger is just a lobby, so that you get the IP from other players willing to play. Lagging issues usually occur when one of the players has a bad connection.

Doesn't work anymore. -you can play crusader online, but it's through a third party app that Is bundled with stronghold crusader when you download it from steam. It's called game ranger I think.
